Every month, one article of the official rules explained simply.

October 2026 · Article 1

What is a basketball game?

• A game is played between 2 teams of 5 players. The aim: score in the opponent's basket and stop the other team from scoring.
• The game is run by the referees, the table officials and, if there is one, a commissioner.
• Players, coaches, team followers and table officials must play a positive role in the smooth running of the game and behave ethically.
• A mistake in the score, fouls or timeouts? It must be reported to the referees straight away so it can be corrected.
• The basket you attack is the opponent's; the basket you defend is your own.
• The game is won by the team that has scored the most points at the end of playing time.
